Arkansas municipalities must use .gov

Beginning June 1, 2026, Arkansas municipal governments must use .gov for their main websites and government and employee email. Cities and towns with fewer than 10,000 residents have until January 1, 2027, to comply. Other website endings are allowed for internal-only sites or temporary sites lasting no more than one year. They are also allowed for events, programs, or information campaigns run with a nongovernment partner. These sites must not reasonably be mistaken for the municipality’s main website. The Arkansas Legislative Council can grant waivers for extraordinary circumstances where compliance causes demonstrable harm to citizens or businesses. A municipal representative must submit a written request explaining the need.

Arkansas state agencies need official domains

Beginning June 1, 2026, Arkansas state agencies, boards, and commissions established by law must use .gov or .mil addresses. This covers their main websites and agency and employee email. Boards and commissions mainly serving covered public colleges are exempt if they offer members .edu email addresses. Other website endings are allowed for internal-only sites or temporary sites lasting no more than one year. They are also allowed for events, programs, or information campaigns run with a nongovernment partner. These sites must not reasonably be mistaken for the agency’s main website. The Arkansas Legislative Council can grant waivers for extraordinary circumstances where compliance causes demonstrable harm to citizens or businesses. The entity’s secretary, chair, or other principal must submit a written request explaining the need.
