Families gain a local school petition

Arkansas incorporated towns and second-class cities can join families in requesting a local public elementary or satellite school. Parents, legal guardians, and people acting as parents of affected students can participate. They must send a written appeal to the receiving school district board. The affected district must be within the town or city and have a public elementary school. It must have undergone consolidation within the 20 years before this section’s effective date. The town or city must be able to provide adequate school facilities. After district board approval, the board and municipality must jointly appeal to the State Board of Education. The school must be within the municipality and associated with the affected district’s existing campus. Any elementary school established becomes part of the receiving district. The municipality and district can agree to contributions of goods or services to establish and maintain the school. The law does not guarantee a school or provide a specific funding amount.
