Arkansas Medicaid adds physician assistant care options

Arkansas Medicaid can recognize physician assistants as primary care providers and case managers, serving as patients’ first healthcare provider. Assistants must be licensed by the Arkansas State Medical Board and authorized by their supervising physician. When first applying, they must provide that physician’s signed, dated written approval. Care stays within their existing legal scope of practice; the law does not expand it. Medicaid pays at least the current reimbursement rate for services within that scope. It pays 100% of the physician reimbursement rate for assistants’ out-of-pocket costs, including lab tests, X-rays, and other tests they order or conduct. Health insurance policies with premiums paid directly or indirectly by Medicaid must follow the same recognition and payment rules.
