Arkansas allows work experience to replace the required master's degree from an American Library Association-accredited program for two library leadership roles. For the State Librarian, the board must approve experience in library science. For regional library directors, the employing board of trustees must approve experience in library operations. The State Librarian still needs good professional standing and reputation, plus library administration experience in academic, public, school, or special libraries. Neither approved substitution disqualifies the library or regional library system from receiving state funds.
