Arkansas raises literacy tutoring grants from $500 to a maximum of $1,500 per eligible student each school year. Only eligible students who receive an award get this help. Awards are first come, first served, with priority for eligible students facing retention in third grade. Funds cover high-dosage tutoring from state-approved providers and approved digital reading tools that follow the science of reading.
Arkansas teachers must complete a credential showing proficiency or awareness in the science of reading, based on their teaching position. Kindergarten-through-sixth-grade elementary teachers, special education teachers in those grades, and reading specialists need proficiency. Other teachers need the awareness credential appropriate to their position. New teachers must meet the requirement to receive a license. Teachers already licensed or working under a licensure waiver have one year to complete the credential.
