Private school students gain public activity options

Arkansas districts and public charter schools can allow private school students to join activities; participation is not guaranteed. Students can participate at their assigned public school or a public charter campus within their resident district. A parent, legal guardian, or person acting as a parent must live in that district. The private school must not offer the activity, and the activity must lack Arkansas Activities Association approval there. The private school must be a registered nonprofit, accredited or licensed by an accrediting group recognized by the state education board. Eligible activities include sports, fine arts, and special-interest clubs or groups between schools, outside the regular curriculum. They must follow Arkansas Activities Association rules and be taught by someone with at least a high school diploma.

Districts get funding for private school participants

A participating private school student must enroll in a matching nonacademic class period when the activity occurs outside a designated class period. The resident district receives one-sixth of the state foundation funding amount for the duration of the student's district enrollment. The supplied law text does not state the base funding amount or a dollar payment to families.
