Arkansas crime victim reparations claims now have a five-year filing deadline after injury or death, up from one year. For minor victims, claims must be filed within five years after they turn 18. The Crime Victims Reparations Board can allow late claims when there is good cause.
Anyone convicted under Arkansas’s Human Trafficking Act must pay restitution to the victim or another appropriate recipient. Payments cover losses from the crime, including medical and mental health care, therapy, rehabilitation, transportation, temporary housing, and child care. They also cover investigation, prosecution, court costs, and victim advocate fees. Property must be returned, or payments must cover damage or the full value of property destroyed or damaged beyond repair. Relocation costs for victims and household or family members include utility, telephone, and rental deposits, temporary lodging, food, clothing, and personal items. These costs need proof they are necessary for the victim’s or household member’s safety, or the victim’s emotional well-being. Other losses from the crime are also covered. Leaving Arkansas or returning to a home country does not block restitution.
