Outside exempt trips, Arkansas farm machinery haulers can apply for one-year permits for vehicles hauling farm equipment. The State Highway Commission can approve widths above the usual legal limit, but no wider than 12 feet. Haulers pay up to $500 per vehicle and must choose routes wide enough for safe travel. The commission may require a bond or other security to repay the Arkansas Department of Transportation for highway or structure damage. That security can also cover vehicle removal costs from width-restricted highways or road construction or maintenance zones.
Arkansas law replaces “dealer” with “hauler” in special-cargo permit exemptions for farm vehicles and machinery. Haulers and repair persons need no special-cargo permit to deliver new or used vehicles or machinery to the purchaser’s farm. The exemption also covers pickup from a farm, transport to a hauler’s or repair person’s shop, and return after repairs. These exemptions do not cover other trips.
