Arkansas levee districts created by the state legislature can request county collection of their assessments in writing. Districts must give the county collector a certified assessment list by December 15 each year. The county collects these charges with other assessments and property taxes, without changing the amount owed. Collections go to the county treasurer monthly. After receiving a proper certificate of distribution, the treasurer credits the district’s fund and promptly sends money to its treasurer. In Crawford County, the sheriff no longer collects levee taxes or receives a 2% commission. For taxes unpaid by April 10, the district board pursues collection against the land. The existing 25% penalty, 6% yearly interest, costs, and possible land sale remain.
