Weekend hours help voters fix ballots
For a primary, general, or special election with a federal office, county and local offices must provide Friday and weekend hours while ballots still need identification or signature fixes. They do not have to open on the weekend once no ballots remain to fix.
New rules for election hand counts
Election officials change how they choose races for hand counts. County races can be used to reach four races; if more are needed, officials choose uncontested races by lot, without a computer, up to five. Party chairpersons can replace a missing hand-count worker with someone from any party. No more than 75% of workers can be from one party, and the replacement cannot delay the count.
Inactive voters can restore ballot access
At a ballot replacement center, inactive voters can confirm or change their registration and get a ballot. But inactive voters are removed from the automatic early-ballot list and do not receive mailed ballots for special-district elections. Special-district ballots go by nonforwardable mail to eligible voters who are not listed as inactive. Voters must confirm or update their registration to regain access to early ballots by mail.
New filing rules for candidates
For 2026 justice of the peace elections, candidates can use their 2024 precinct, a changed or redistricted precinct, or a court-ordered district plan on filing papers. Petition signers can live in any district the candidate seeks to represent. This rule does not cover special elections to fill vacancies. Candidates who withdraw must file a signed, notarized statement with the filing officer.
