Credit freezes protect children in care

The Arizona Department of Child Safety must freeze a child's credit within 30 days after the child is adjudicated dependent and placed in its care. The freeze stays in place until the child turns 16, when the child can keep it or have it removed. Credit reporting agencies must place or remove freezes within 30 days of a proper request, and cannot charge fees. The department must notify a parent or guardian when it places a freeze and explain how to remove it if the child leaves care while the freeze remains.
