Free police records for crime victims

Covered victims can get one free copy of the police report and related audio and video recordings. This applies to Part I crimes and delinquent acts. For domestic violence or sexual offense reports, the victim or the victim’s attorney can get a copy. An immediate family member can get a copy if the victim is killed or incapacitated.

Victims can challenge record denials

A victim denied access to a covered public record during a criminal case in superior court can challenge the denial through a special court process within that case. A court may award attorney fees when a party substantially prevails. Existing rights to fees, expenses, and double damages remain.
