Audits of child safety records
The Arizona Auditor General’s team can review the Department of Child Safety’s case system, including placement records and data errors. The review must follow an audit plan reviewed by the Joint Legislative Audit Committee.
More checks on foster care homes
The Department of Child Safety can make unannounced visits and inspections at licensed group foster homes. It can also inspect homes where children in its care are placed in kinship foster care. These checks strengthen oversight of children’s living conditions.
Supervised training for new child safety workers
The Department of Child Safety must have each newly hired child safety worker work and train under an experienced worker for at least one year. This supervised training may support the quality of child safety services.
Priority and rules for child caregivers
The Department of Child Safety gives placement priority to a child’s parent, relative, or someone close to the child, but does not guarantee a specific placement. When a child is placed with a caregiver, the department must explain available services and help with applications. Without written approval, the caregiver cannot place the child with someone else, allow contact with specified people, or let the child leave Arizona.
