Water-safety info for families in schools

If your child is in a California public school, the school can share water-safety materials with your family. Safety groups must give these materials to schools for free and cannot ask for donations. The materials explain swim lessons and local programs, including free or low-cost options, and list contacts. Schools may give them at enrollment and at the start of each school year, and are encouraged to share them in the first week of May. Materials must match CDC and trusted pediatric and Red Cross guidance, with a one-page proof given to the school. Upon request from the school, materials are in English, and groups are encouraged to add the school’s other common languages.

No verification duty for school admins

If you are a school administrator, you do not have to verify an organization’s one-page proof of alignment. The law removes that verification duty when you engage with approved safety groups.

Public health review of drowning rules

The State Department of Public Health reviews drowning-prevention laws and regulations and can suggest technical updates to the Legislature. The review can cover rules adopted from 2010 through 2025. Recommendations follow Government Code section 9795.

State website posts water-safety lessons

The California Department of Education posts age-appropriate water-safety and drowning-prevention lessons on its website. It works with the Departments of Developmental Services and Public Health. The department may point to freely accessible curricula when compiling these resources.
