The Office of Emergency Services sets rules with the state forestry department and the FIRESCOPE board. All equipment used by private fire crews at active fires must be clearly labeled "nonemergency." Private vehicles cannot use emergency lights or sirens. Crews cannot show labels like "emergency personnel" or "fire department." These rules keep command clear and reduce public confusion.
Private fire crews cannot hook to public water at an active fire unless incident command or the local authority approves. Their equipment must also have a backflow prevention device. These rules protect drinking water from contamination and unauthorized draws. The law does not change a community water system’s authority to run its distribution system.
