The law requires the state teacher credentialing commission to set efficient dual-credential routes. Teacher candidates can earn two credentials together, including multiple subject, single subject, PK–3 early childhood, and special education. Current general education teachers can add an education specialist credential, and specialists can add general or PK–3. The commission completes these rules, with input from the field, by March 1, 2027, through the formal rulemaking process.
The commission reviews current ways teachers add credentials and authorizations. It identifies coursework that can count for more than one credential to cut duplicate training. It reviews whether to add supplementary authorizations to let teachers serve students with or without disabilities. It studies barriers and opportunities, looks at other states’ routes, and flags any needed law changes. This work is done with field input and finished by March 1, 2027, through the formal rulemaking process.
