The law treats heart trouble that starts or shows up while working as a work injury for two groups: prison officers and employees with custodial duties at the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and peace officers employed by the State Department of State Hospitals. The condition is presumed to be work-related unless other evidence shows otherwise. Covered officers can get full hospital, surgical, and medical care, disability pay, and death benefits under California workers' compensation. After you leave, the presumption continues three months for each full year you served, up to 60 months, starting on your last day actually worked.
