Jails must notify loved ones within 24 hours

County and city jails must tell everyone named on an incarcerated person’s medical release or next-of-kin forms. They must do this within 24 hours after the person dies. The law takes effect right away. If the Commission on State Mandates finds state‑mandated costs, the state pays local agencies and school districts back under existing law.
