The law authorizes the California Department of Justice to create an automated information and alert system for protective order cases. When funded, petitioners and protected persons get automated updates. You can see if DOJ got your order, if it was served, and if the restrained person tried to buy a gun or ammunition while the order is active. The system only operates if the Legislature provides money.
The law makes two types of protective order records open to the public. Anyone can ask to see whether a superior court sent required protective order information. The law also declares that DOJ records showing it received protective order information are public and not exempt. You can request these under the California Public Records Act.
