If your local publicly owned electric utility lacks the needed system, it must act in steps. By March 1, 2026, it creates procedures to maximize automatic enrollment. By March 1, 2028, it makes a system upgrade plan. If the board finds the plan cost-effective, the utility must implement it at the next significant planned upgrade or by March 1, 2030, whichever comes first.
By March 1, 2026, your electric, gas, and water utility automatically enrolls you to get outage and status alerts. You can opt out of nonessential alerts, but required or emergency notices still go through. Each year, your bill shows how to update your contact preferences. You can update on the utility website, and by phone if the utility can offer it. Local public electric utilities that lack the needed system follow a phased timeline.
