A child meets district residency when a parent is transferred to a California military base on active-duty orders. The district accepts electronic enrollment and course registration. Parents must give proof of address within 10 days after the official arrival date. Acceptable proof includes on-base temporary housing, a bought or rented home, or off-base federal military housing. If the child gets or may need special education, 504, or ADA help, the new district acts fast. It works with parents and the old school to swap records and cut service gaps.
If a student moves within the same special education local plan area (SELPA), services continue right away unless a new IEP is agreed. If the move is within California but to a different local plan, the new district gives comparable services for up to 30 days and then adopts the old IEP or starts a new one. For moves from another state, the district gives comparable services while it assesses. Within 30 days of getting official or unofficial records, it must adopt the old IEP or develop and start a new one. The new school must request records quickly and accept unofficial records from parents while waiting; the previous school must respond quickly.
If a student in a residential nonpublic school moves to a district in another SELPA, the original SELPA pays. When that placement is not eligible under Section 56836.165, it must fund the placement and related services for the rest of the school year. Extended year sessions count in the year they end.
