Renters can opt out of bundled internet

Beginning January 1, 2026, you can opt out of paying for a landlord-arranged internet plan. This applies if your rental starts, renews, or continues month-to-month or other periodic on or after that date. It covers third‑party wired, cellular, or satellite service offered with your tenancy, including bulk-billed plans. If your landlord refuses your opt-out, you can deduct that subscription cost from your rent. Landlords cannot retaliate against you for using these rights. Landlords may still offer bulk internet, but you choose whether to pay. The law uses the same meaning of “internet service provider” as in Civil Code Section 3100.
