The state runs senior meal projects at least five days a week, with at least one meal per day. You can eat in person or pick up a to-go meal to join a virtual group. Services focus on people age 60 or older who meet program rules. Sites are placed near where seniors live, and agencies do outreach to sign people up. The law drops the old rule that extra meals had to meet Recommended Dietary Allowances.
Meals you eat outside group settings can be delivered under the federal home-delivered meals program. Delivered meals must follow that program’s rules. If you are homebound, the program provides suitable transportation when feasible so you can get services. This expands options for seniors who cannot travel.
Meal sites also offer recreation, health and wellness talks, counseling, and referral help. The program provides nutrition education. Providers offer special menus, when possible, for health, religious, or cultural diets. Program decisions include advice from experts and older adults who use the service.
