Out-of-state discipline won't count for California lawyers

The law protects California attorneys and bar applicants in cases tied to “sensitive services” legal in California. If another state’s law led to civil judgment, court sanctions, charges or conviction, or professional discipline, it is an “excluded event.” Excluded events are not grounds for suspension, disbarment, or admission denial. You do not have to report them to the State Bar, and they cannot prove misconduct here. This applies regardless of location, but not if the same conduct violates California law.
