State approves Chukchansi gaming compact update

California approves the fourth amendment to its gaming compact with the Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians. The amendment was signed on June 4, 2025, and is now valid and binding under federal Indian gaming law. This urgency law takes effect immediately, so the tribe and state operate under the updated terms right away.

Limited environmental review for compact agreements

Some compact-related actions are not treated as projects under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). This covers signing the compact or an amended compact. It also covers intergovernmental agreements named in the compact with a city, county, the state Department of Transportation, or another state agency, and on-reservation impacts from following the compact. All other city, county, and state actions still must follow CEQA.
