AEDs at youth practices and games

Beginning January 1, 2028, if a youth sports organization offers an athletic program, it must make an AED available at every official practice and match. AEDs must be maintained and tested under the maker’s instructions and any FDA or other applicable rules. These duties apply along with the coach training and emergency plan rules.

Youth sports: trained coaches and plans

Beginning January 1, 2027, youth sports organizations must ensure coaches are certified in CPR and using an AED, with recertification at least every two years. Training may be online or in person from an accredited group that follows national, evidence-based heart care guidelines. Organizations must keep a written cardiac emergency response plan and review it each year with coaches and staff. The plan must list AED locations, steps during sudden cardiac arrest, and roles for coaches, administrators, and athletes, plus how they are notified and trained. Parents or guardians must get a yearly email with the plan or a link, AED locations, and who to contact in an emergency.
