Jobs and training for fire-impacted workers

The state funds Los Angeles County’s Department of Economic Opportunity to run wildfire recovery workforce programs in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Help includes education, training, preapprenticeships, transitional jobs, and supportive services like stipends for underemployed and unemployed low- to moderate-income people. It also supports rapid response, layoff aversion, recruitment, incentives, and customized training for affected businesses and for employers hiring impacted workers. New or expanded job and business centers near the fire zones provide nearby access to services. Training focuses on construction, utilities, firefighting, health care, social services, education, childcare, housing, shelter work, and other recovery jobs. Program participants get access to expedited licensing and certification when feasible.

Managing funds for wildfire workforce help

Los Angeles County must send $600,000 to the Economic Development Collaborative for these wildfire workforce efforts. The state may use up to 5% of the allocation for administration, keeping most money for local programs. The county may subcontract with training providers and community groups to deliver services. All funded programs must meet the state’s quality standards.
