The law expands who counts as an elected or appointed official under the Public Records Act. It now covers state officers, lawmakers, judges (state, federal, tribal) and federal defenders, prosecutors, public defenders, mayors, city council members, county supervisors, city attorneys, police chiefs or sheriffs, public safety officials, state administrative law judges, members of Congress, presidential appointees, gubernatorial or legislative appointees, and court‑appointed children’s counsel. For these officials, personal details like home addresses and personal phone numbers are kept private. Sharing or publishing protected information can bring criminal penalties. This improves privacy and safety for officials and families, but limits public access to that personal data.
