Stronger rules on taking migratory birds

The law makes it illegal to take or possess any migratory bird protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. It also bans possessing any part of those birds. The ban covers birds listed as of January 1, 2025, and any birds added after that date. Actions allowed by federal rules under that act are allowed, unless they conflict with California law. The state repeals the 2019 rule and replaces it. This act takes effect immediately to protect birds and their habitats.
