Responders can give pet first aid

Emergency responders may give basic first aid to dogs and cats, unless their employer forbids it. Allowed steps include oxygen, mask ventilation, clearing the upper airway (not intubation), direct pressure, and bandaging. The law shields responders from criminal charges under veterinary practice rules for this care. It clarifies which civil liability rules apply to responders and to other people. The law does not require anyone to treat or transport pets, and a 911 call does not require pet services or create liability for not providing them.

Ambulances can aid and carry police dogs

Licensed ambulances, and tribal fire department ambulances, can carry an injured police or search and rescue dog to a vet when no person needs transport. The handler should ride along if possible. Emergency responders can give basic first aid during transport and are protected from civil and criminal liability when acting in good faith and unpaid, except for gross negligence or willful or wanton misconduct. Giving this care is not treated as paid work. No ambulance or responder is required to carry or treat these dogs. Ambulance companies that choose to do so must adopt a canine transport policy, including equipment and decontamination, and get local EMS approval; this policy rule does not apply to ambulances run by a tribal fire department. Contracting agencies cannot make canine care or transport a condition to win an emergency response or transport contract. These rules cover police canines and search and rescue dogs.
