In bench trials, you can ask the judge for a statement that explains the facts and law on each main disputed issue. Until January 1, 2027, ask within 10 days after the tentative decision (for very short trials, ask before the case is submitted). Starting January 1, 2027, ask before the case is submitted, in writing or aloud if the hearing is transcribed. The court serves the written statement on all parties, and any party can object within 10 days. The court may hold a hearing and issue a final or amended statement. The judge can ask a party to draft the statement or a proposed judgment, and courts use forms and may adjust deadlines for good cause. In short trials, the court may state the decision on the record.
Until January 1, 2027, after a jury verdict the clerk enters judgment within 24 hours unless the court reserves the case or grants a stay. Starting January 1, 2027, jury cases keep the 24‑hour rule. For bench trials starting January 1, 2027, the clerk enters judgment within 30 days after the court’s decision if no statement is requested, or within 30 days after the statement of decision is final if one is requested. A judgment has no legal effect until it is entered.
