Social media warnings for youth

Beginning January 1, 2027, covered social platforms must show health warnings. They cover “addictive” services, not shopping sites, email, private messages, cloud storage, or work tools. At first use each day, show the warning for at least 10 seconds. It must cover at least 25% of the screen and can be dismissed with an X. After 3 hours of active use, show it again, then at least once each hour. Each time, keep it up 30 seconds, block bypass, and cover 75% of the screen. Platforms may skip warnings for users reasonably determined to be over 17. The text must be easy to read, in black on a white background. It says: "The Surgeon General has warned that while social media may have benefits for some young users, social media is associated with significant mental health harms and has not been proven safe for young users."

Warning notice and your rights

Beginning January 1, 2027, the warning notice does not block most lawsuits. Showing it, or clicking to dismiss, does not waive failure-to-warn or other claims. The only limit is for a claim based on breaking this section. Also, this chapter does not create a private right of action. People must rely on other laws to sue.
