Beginning January 1, 2027, browser makers must include a user setting that sends an opt-out preference signal to businesses you visit. The setting must be easy to find and change. Browser makers must clearly explain in public materials how the signal works and what it does. The signal tells businesses you opt out of the sale and sharing of your personal information. The California Privacy Protection Agency can issue rules and enforce these requirements.
Beginning January 1, 2027, if a browser includes the required opt-out signal feature, the browser developer is not liable for a receiving business’s violation of California privacy law. The protection applies only when the browser sends the required signal.
