The law requires accurate accents in names on birth, death, and marriage records. This requirement starts no earlier than two years after the Legislature funds it. Using or missing an accent does not change a record’s legal validity. The State Registrar can list allowed marks without formal rulemaking and may remove marks when sending data to other agencies.
Beginning July 1, 2026, you can file an oath-based affidavit to add a missing accent to your name on a birth, death, or marriage record. A second person with knowledge must support your affidavit. File with the State Registrar; for confidential marriages, file with the county clerk. You must pay the required fee, and counties may charge a reasonable fee for confidential marriage amendments. The amendment becomes part of the official record.
Certified copies have base fees plus an added $5 collected by registrars or clerks. A birth certificate copy costs $12 for public agencies and $16 for others; $4 goes to a children’s trust fund, and counties may add up to $3 for a county children’s trust fund. On January 1, 2027, a new fee schedule takes effect and adds $2 of the $16 birth fee to the Umbilical Cord Blood Collection Program Fund. Under that 2027 schedule, death and fetal death copies cost $12, and marriage or dissolution copies cost $3 for public agencies and $6 for others, with $3 sent to the state. Fee revenue supports local and state vital-record upgrades and health data work, with annual county reporting.
