Affordable campus homes for faculty and staff

If a campus housing project includes units for faculty and staff, the district must offer some at affordable rents. Affordable rent and income levels use state rules for extremely low income and lower income employees. The law does not say how many units must be set aside. It also defines key terms, including “satellite campus” and “university housing development project,” for these housing rules.

Community colleges bypass local zoning for housing

Community college districts do not need to follow city or county zoning to build campus housing on land they own or lease. The parcel must be within a half mile of a main campus, or a satellite campus that existed before July 1, 2025. This rule applies statewide, including charter cities. It can speed up new housing near campuses.
