The law creates a new assistant teacher permit for state preschool and child care programs that contract with the state. To qualify, you need at least six college units in early childhood, child development, or human development, a yearly education plan with active enrollment toward the next permit, and sponsorship by your contracted employer. You work under a teacher‑level supervisor, but you may supervise children alone for up to 120 minutes per day. Each site may use no more assistants than 50% of its classroom count, and only one assistant can be assigned per classroom. The permit lasts up to two years and cannot be renewed; employers must keep your current education plan on file, and agencies must report counts of permit holders or waivers each year. The law takes effect now, and the Commission must roll out this permit by January 30, 2026; these temporary rules end one year after a new permit matrix takes effect, or on January 1, 2029, whichever is later.
