Stricter oversight for AITs and supervisors

The board can investigate anyone using the AIT title, on its own or after a complaint. It can suspend or revoke an active authorization if you lose your supervising architect, obtained authorization by fraud or misrepresentation, or broke this chapter or the board’s rules. Using the title in violation of the rules is unprofessional conduct and can lead to a citation, discipline under Section 5587, or denial of a license. A supervising licensed architect can also be disciplined for violations an AIT commits within the course and scope of employment.

New architect-in-training title in 2027

Beginning Jan 1, 2027, the law lets licensure candidates use the title “architect‑in‑training” (AIT). To qualify, the board must list you as a candidate, you must pass at least one division of the Architect Registration Examination, and you must name a supervising licensed architect. The supervisor must send the board a form agreeing to be responsible before approval. You cannot use the title to offer or provide architectural services on your own, and you may only shorten the title to “AIT.” The board can tell the public if you are authorized, and it may charge a reasonable‑cost fee to check your eligibility.

Time limits for using AIT title

If your supervising architect changes, you must tell the board within 30 days and give the new name and license number. You may place your authorization on inactive status while you have no supervisor, and reactivate later without reapplying or paying an extra fee once a new supervisor is named. You can use the AIT title for up to four years after approval. You may get a second authorization if you passed a division of the exam within the four years before you apply. No new applications are accepted on or after Jan 1, 2033, and the AIT program ends Jan 1, 2037.
