Program ends if donations fall short

The fund stays on the tax form only if expected gifts reach at least $250,000 each year. Starting by September 1 of the second year it appears, and every year after, the tax agency checks the estimate. If the estimate is under $250,000, the fund stops for returns starting January 1 of that year and the law is repealed on December 1. The law also ends after seven calendar years from its first appearance.

Donate to Parkinson's on your tax return

You can donate $1 or more, in whole dollars, to a Parkinson’s research fund on your original California return. Each person on a joint return can choose. Your choice is final for that year. The gift comes only from any amount above your tax bill; if there is no extra amount, no gift is made. If you choose several funds and don’t have enough, the amount is split across them. If you don’t name a fund, the money goes to the state General Fund after collection costs. Your donation is tax-deductible under state rules and can lower your state taxable income.

State fund sends donations to research

The state created the Parkinson’s Disease Research Voluntary Tax Contribution Fund. The tax agency tells the Controller how much people gave above their tax. The Controller moves up to that amount into the fund. Money first repays the tax agencies’ actual collection costs. The rest goes to Public Health to run the Richard Paul Hemann Parkinson’s Disease Program. The department posts required reports online.
