Once the Legislature provides money, the state health department funds and hires an outside expert to study midwifery education statewide. The study reviews program trends, costs to educate midwives, student tuition help and debt, and ways to grow and diversify the student pipeline. It also looks at clinical training needs, preceptor shortages, program models for rural and urban areas, and job demand for new graduates. The department sends the report to the Legislature, posts it online, and notifies its reproductive health and maternity care email list. The report is due no later than 36 months after funds are appropriated.
