The law requires the State Fire Marshal, with Cal/OSHA, to run a working group on firefighter gear for lithium‑ion battery fires. The State Fire Marshal selects members from fire service leaders, academia, health and safety experts, Cal/OSHA, and a utility labor union. The group reviews the latest gear to limit metal exposure and how to clean it after these fires. It also checks whether gear should differ for big battery sites, home systems, electric vehicles, and on‑scene decontamination. Recommendations are due to the Legislature by September 1, 2026, and reports must follow state reporting rules; the reporting mandate ends January 1, 2030, and the section sunsets January 1, 2031.
