City grants for wildfire safety projects

Cities, counties, and special districts can get grants for projects that reduce wildfire risk across a community. They must show the project matches program priorities and how they will track results before getting funds. This supports collective actions that can protect many homes.

Funding and oversight for Safe Homes program

The law creates the Sustainable Insurance Account to hold money for the program. The Department of Insurance can set program rules, define eligibility, and use contractors to run it. The California FAIR Plan must send a yearly report on how many policyholders meet wildfire mitigation rating factors. By January 1, 2027, and every two years after, the department must post a performance report with funding totals, locations, and recommendations, and send it to the Legislature.

Home hardening grants for low income owners

The law creates the California Safe Homes grant program run by the Department of Insurance. It helps pay to harden homes so you can lower wildfire risk and qualify for insurance discounts. Grants are funded first for roof replacement that meets Safer from Wildfires rules, then for a five‑foot noncombustible zone around the home. You can apply if your home is insured by an admitted insurer or the FAIR Plan, your ZIP overlaps a high or very high fire‑hazard zone on current CalFIRE maps, and your income is at or below your county’s low‑income limit set by Housing and Community Development. If you get a grant, you must keep receipts, attest the work was done, and report whether you later qualified for wildfire mitigation incentives from your insurer.
