Beginning July 1, 2026, general acute care hospitals must tell you about the hospital’s patient directory. They must do this at admission, or as soon as possible in an emergency or if you are incapacitated. You or your legal representative can restrict or block sharing your protected health information in the directory under federal rules. The hospital must give a short paper or digital form with a checkbox, or staff can give the notice verbally. The notice must be available in the top five non‑English languages used in the hospital’s service area.
