The law bans sex or gender bias in community youth sports. Cities, counties, park and recreation districts, and school agencies must treat girls and boys equally. This covers how programs are run and how fields, gyms, equipment, and funds are given out. It applies to programs the agency runs, supports, or enables. The law defines what programs and facilities count, so families know what is covered.
You can sue a city, county, special district, or school agency for discrimination in youth sports. Courts can order changes, award damages, or both. Judges must look at key factors: chances to play, money and gear, schedules, coaching and pay, fields, locker rooms, locations, publicity, and trained officials. Courts also check if opportunities match the local numbers of girls and boys. If one gender is underrepresented, the court decides if their interests are fully accommodated.
If the state’s Commission on State Mandates finds this law creates new local costs, the state reimburses them. Payments follow the standard mandate reimbursement process in state law.
