The law requires California State University (CSU) to work with California Indian tribes to create a policy for reburial of Native American human remains that CSU has returned, when reburial is on CSU land. The policy follows the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. It must cover where on campus reburials can happen and which tribes are culturally tied to the land. It must also address long-term protection and care, compliance with federal, tribal, state, and local laws, burial topics tribes request, access for tribal cultural protocols, and confidentiality. Any reburial site on CSU land must be agreed to by CSU and the culturally affiliated tribe or tribes.
