For property within five miles of the Chiquita Canyon Landfill, relief applies if all payments due on or before January 7, 2025 were on time. A redemption plan that met this rule is not in default until April 10, 2030. For qualifying installment plans that met this rule, the taxes are suspended, not collected, and not treated as delinquent until April 10, 2030.
Los Angeles County must reassess any property within five miles of the Chiquita Canyon Landfill for value lost from the landfill event. The change is retroactive to the January 1, 2022 lien date. The assessor sends a notice with the new value and the amount of the change. If you paid taxes at the higher value, you can file a refund claim with the auditor-controller.
If a documented hardship from the Chiquita Canyon elevated temperature landfill event caused your late payment, the tax collector can cancel penalties and extra charges. You must pay the tax principal by June 30 of the fourth fiscal year after the year it became delinquent. The tax collector decides if your documents show the hardship.
