Statewide authority for police and state agents

The law names many local officers as peace officers, including sheriffs, deputies, city police, marshals, and port police. They can act anywhere in California in three cases: when a crime ties to their city or county; with prior approval from the local chief for that place; or when a crime happens in their presence with immediate danger or risk of escape. The Attorney General and Department of Justice agents are also peace officers. They have statewide authority where a crime happened or where there is probable cause.

Limited statewide powers for jail deputies

The law covers deputy sheriffs in Los Angeles and many other named counties, now including Amador and Nevada. It applies to deputies hired for jail and inmate custody work. They are peace officers, but their statewide authority is narrow. It only applies while doing custody, care, supervision, security, movement, or transport of inmates. It also applies if their agency assigns other law enforcement work during a local state of emergency.
