Sharing HIV results for care and Medi-Cal

Your doctor can share your HIV test result with your other health care providers for diagnosis, care, or treatment. If you are in Medi-Cal, your provider can give your identifiable result to your assigned Medi-Cal managed care plan and to contracted external quality review groups. This sharing is only to run quality improvement programs, like value-based payments and healthy behavior incentives, to improve HIV care. Plans can share de-identified results with state health staff for the same program work.

Stronger limits on sharing HIV results

Providers and plans that get your HIV test result under this law cannot share it again unless another law allows it. Identifiable results cannot go to other health care service plans without your written OK, except your assigned Medi-Cal managed care plan. These rules follow existing HIV privacy laws. Results cannot be shared with federal or out-of-state authorities unless federal law requires it.
