The Chancellor of the California Community Colleges can set fees for researchers who ask for individually identifiable or student data. Fees cover significant data work, like compiling, extracting, or programming by the chancellor’s office. Undergraduate and graduate students do not pay for data for their own studies. Community college faculty do not pay for their own research. Most state agencies do not pay, except fees can apply when data is released for research to the University of California, the California State University, or the State Department of Education. Any fee policy is reviewed and approved by the Board of Governors, updated regularly, posted on the chancellor’s website, and follows federal and state privacy laws like FERPA and California privacy law.
