The law makes it a crime to pay or offer to pay someone to vote or to register to vote. It also bans payments tied to whether a person voted or their registration status, including prize drawings or lotteries. You may still pay for rides to and from a voting place, pay someone as part of a government job, or give employees time off to vote. Violations can bring a fine up to $10,000 and jail time of 16 months, 2 years, or 3 years, or county jail up to one year, or both. Only the listed exemptions apply.
