Peer support help and training for officers

Peer support services help law enforcement staff and their immediate family after critical incidents or repeated exposure. Services include education, defusings and debriefings, on‑scene and one‑on‑one support, grief help, substance abuse awareness, and referrals. Peer support team members must be agency employees who completed peer support training. Agencies must put selection rules for these team members into policy. The law covers officers and employees of local or regional agencies that employ peace officers.

Confidential peer support talks for officers

The law protects confidential talks between law enforcement personnel and peer support members, crisis hotlines, and in group peer sessions. Group sessions must include more than one recipient and a peer support member or a mental health professional. A talk is confidential only when shared in confidence and kept to those needed to give support. It does not cover admitting a crime or plans to deceive an investigation. You can refuse to disclose these talks and stop others from disclosing them. Sharing is allowed to make a crisis referral, for peer member consultation, to prevent death, serious harm, or a crime, with your written consent, in criminal or juvenile cases, or when the law requires it. Crisis referral services include help for mental health, addiction, violence, gambling, or money trouble, but not services run by labor organizations.
